Miss Sciency's Discovery Rocks the Paleo/Archeo World!!
15-July-2017
Castle Trail
Badlands National Park
South Dakota
The team hit the trails for the first time today. We knew it was going to get hot so we got an early start, on the trail by before 7am
Badlands is a neat park with lots of erosion going on. So much so that the park people want you to get out off the trails and look for fossils.
Don't mind the rattlesnakes!
Anyway a mile or so out we were off trail .
Miss Sciency was scouting the strata looking for anything out of place.
I was mostly looking out for rattlesnakes.
Then she found it!
Buried in a sod table a skeleton from time even before time-forgotten!
No doubt a species unknown to anyone who ever knew anything.
Destined to turn the scientific community on its ear.
Actually it turned out not to be a fossil but the bones of a large mammal, probably a bison.
Buried beneath the dirt somewhere between five and one hundred thousand years ago.
Not old enough nor fossilized enough for a major publication or guest appearance at the National Academy of Science.
But we were happy nonetheless.
And we didn't find any rattlesnakes.
Badlands is a hot place. Mirror in the Gunship
