Spearfish Canyon Black Hills SD

Red Lodge Montana
We decided to make way westward toward cooler weather & headed north through the Black Hills via Deadwood, Lead and the Spearfish Canyon Highway.
Its no wonder 500,000 bikers convene every year in nearby Sturgis. The roads through the Black Hills have curves perfect for carving with a bike.
Turns out they were a little less perfect on the Gunship but Captain A.D. Venture did his best
We enjoyed the views and stopped often enough to enjoy the ride.
After Spearfish it was a whole lot of high plains drifting across South Dakota and into Montana.
We made a quick stop at the Battle of Little Big Horn and ended up staying a few hours.
We lucked into a great ranger presentation which painted a detailed picture of the 2-3 hour battle
Also the geography of the battlefield is laid out in its entirety in 4 miles of rolling plain.
You can stand at the Last Stand Hill and take it all in
Knowing all this Custer still ends up dead.
But at least I know why
Mistakes, some of them very bad. .
We drove on, ate a good pizza and holed up in a hotel in Red Lodge for the night.

Spearfish Canyon Black Hills SD
Native American Monument- Quite a few years late
We spotted this horse standing on a hill a few miles away. At first we thought it was a fake. I took out the binocs and confirmed it was real.
This is as good as we could get with the small camera.
Note his buddies a little further down the hill. Its like he's playing King of the Hill.
